New balan: Fast DDC/IO hardware conversion – from TREND to DEOS, with new DI16/G IO module

Located on the former Siemens site in the heart of Munich, this campus offers more than just a standard coworking space for companies and innovators. The sophisticated mix of buildings from different construction phases is being gradually optimized in terms of energy efficiency and retrofitted while remaining in operation.

Wiring in the control cabinet could remain in place

In order to create the possibility of accommodating additional tenants on the premises, the building automation system in House 7 was modernized (retrofitted) in this planned construction phase. For the newly installed heating system, the district heating transfer control was redesigned with two heating circuits. To this end, the old DDC controllers and IO modules in the existing control cabinet were to be replaced. This project was implemented by DEOS AG, a German manufacturer, in collaboration with our long-standing DEOS system partner from Munich, Caverion Deutschland – Gebäudetechnik & Facility Services.

Compact design and 1:1 transfer of cabling

The existing automation (DDC controller and IO modules) came from TREND and was replaced in the control cabinet—which was to be reused for economic reasons—by the compact hardware components of the OPEN series. Thanks to the space-saving design of the DEOS hardware, there was even space left in the control cabinet after the conversion for later expansion.

The client requested the rapid replacement or conversion of the existing TREND Automation system. From more than 15 different DEOS IO modules, Caverion selected the new DEOS IO module DI16/G— a digital input module with ground switching.

With this DEOS IO module, TREND systems as well as other existing systems with ground switching (e.g., Sauter, K&P, Johnson & Delta) can be easily converted, as the cabling can be retained 1:1. This reduces costs and saves valuable conversion time. The built-in DEOS IO modules allow existing sensors and actuators to be reused and integrated.

The highlights of the DEOS modules include onboard visualization of operating and bus states, DIN rail mounting, optional manual control for emergencies or maintenance, a self-test function, and CAN bus communication for connecting modules with a length of up to 5 km.
