DEOS wireless thermostats installed during ongoing use of the building and energy consumption was significantly minimized

A former brewery in Denmark was converted years ago into a part of an attractive office complex with around 10,000 offices. Now there was a desire to save more heating energy in the building. Due to the thick wall structure in this historic building, those responsible were looking for a suitable wireless solution instead of a cost-intensive cable installation. This quickly led to the battery-free LoRaWAN DEOS TEO wireless thermostats, which were connected to the built-in REGIN Arrigo management platform via MODBUS.

“After only a few days of installation during ongoing building operation, energy was immediately noticeably saved”

In this retrofit project, those responsible were looking for a quick and economical energy-saving solution for the modernisation of the historic building in operation. As heating accounts for around 70% of the total energy requirement in buildings, those responsible focussed on finding a solution in this area. The office building is equipped with classic radiator heating systems including manual heating thermostats and draws its thermal energy from the district heating network. The existing REGIN Arrigo BMS building management system controls the transfer station and the building’s tree ventilation systems (note: DEOS and REGIN are brands of the REGIN Group). When looking for a solution, it was important to the decision-makers that counter-rotating heating with open windows was prevented and that the Arrigo BMS system that had already been installed was integrated.

Wireless or classic wired solution?

Due to the extremely thick walls, a classic wired solution was ruled out here – also for cost reasons. Those responsible became aware of the battery-free LoRaWAN wireless
thermostat DEOS TEO and focussed on this wireless solution.

LoRaWAN – extremely good wireless network coverage

When analysing the building structure, it became obvious that a WLAN/EnOcean wireless solution would not be economical here: the number of wireless repeaters required for seamless wireless network coverage would be very high and therefore expensive. This would also have made network management complex.

60x DEOS TEO in first expansion stage

In this first expansion stage, 60x old manual heating thermostats were replaced with smart DEOS TEO thermostats plug&play and while the building was in use. The work on site, including the installation of the LoRaWAN network, was completed in just two days without any dirt or noise. The TEO configuration (e.g. calendar/time programs) and the rapid integration into the existing Arrigo system using existing DEOS templates could be carried out remotely. This saved further project/travelling costs and made the experts’ work extremely flexible.

Technical support for this project was provided by the regional REGIN office in Højbjerg (Denmark). “The quality of this Thermostat differs significantly from other solutions in the smart home world,” emphasizes Peter Kjær-Jepsen / RE-GIN DK.

“Our customer is delighted with the solidity, the design of the high-quality aluminum housing and the freedom to manipulate the device. As no direct manual intervention is required on the radiator, this also ensures the expected energy-saving effect. Nobody forgets to turn down the radiators at night or at the weekend anymore.” On Monday morning, all rooms are automatically heated up again on time.

The solution can later be expanded with window/door contacts from alternative manufacturers or a LoRaWAN room control unit if, for example, temperature settings in a defined + 3 degrees range are to be made directly by the office staff. In standard operation, room temperatures are set individually for each room but centrally via the DEOS TEO application.
