Heating system service via remote Internet access through a virtual service technician

Modern solutions for historic buildings

As part of the desired modernization, those responsible for the church community decided to install a DEOS Connect Box in addition to the DEOS DDC control controller (type OPEN 500 EMS) and a 10.1″ embedded touch PC that had already been installed. The aim was to achieve secure remote access.

The advantage of the DEOS Connect Box became apparent even during the optimization of the heating system in operation: quick and flexible appointment scheduling in the event of a problem. Coordinating appointments is always a challenge in everyday work.
This can often be dangerous, especially in situations where quick action is required. In order to optimize operations quickly in this case, a virtual appointment was quickly and easily arranged with the DEOS technician. The technician joined virtually via the Internet and helped with the optimization—quickly, easily, and without travel time or costs.

Together with the local heating engineer, who still traditionally traveled to the site, the temperature requirements for the boiler cascade control unit had to be parameterized. The DEOS service technician was able to do his part of the work remotely via the Internet using the DEOS Connect Box connection—all in accordance with the highest IT security standards.

Background:

There was no DSL Internet connection available at the church. Therefore, after close consultation with DEOS experts, those responsible decided on a Connect Box with LTE mobile phone access. This saved on Internet connection costs and allowed the project to be completed on schedule without any delays.

Solutions that inspire in practice and reduce costs

“Then the investment in the Connect Box has already paid off,” said Ernst Henke, technical manager at St. Mariä Himmelfahrt Church in Appelhülsen, with a smile. He was thrilled with the simple way in which the DEOS service team carried out the settings on the system. This meant that there was no need for a costly visit from a DEOS technician, which could have involved a waiting period. Ultimately, the quick optimization of the church’s heating system reduces costs.

When carrying out the work, the DEOS technician from Rheine also used the remote connection to the Connect Box installed on site. Using trend displays in the DEOS OPENweb building management system, the control behavior of the boiler system could be recorded, evaluated, and optimized.
