Secure and cost-saving remote monitoring quickly and easily implemented via Connect Boxes

The police are responsible for ensuring the safety and protection of the population in Berlin. This high level of security is reflected in all areas of the Berlin Police Department: for example, the most important goal in the building automation upgrade of the police academy was to protect the various buildings from external cyber attacks. Due to the size of the entire arsenal and the many different buildings, modern remote access for service technicians was also to be set up. This enables quick action, saves time, and is ultimately more economical.

Since the buildings of the police academy are quite old and the technology installed at the time is no longer up to date, another important step was to achieve optimum energy efficiency in the operation of the buildings in order to reduce energy costs. The energy meters are also to be read remotely, eliminating the need for manual recording. DEOS technologies enable real-time energy consumption data, including the display and reading of trend values, to be managed via the on-site server.

Another important step was to improve coordination within the service team, which currently consists of 12 employees. Thanks to the DEOS Secure AlarmApp, all service technicians are always informed about the current status of the systems – via smartphone, tablet, or laptop, anywhere on the premises and at any time. The AlarmApp makes the daily work of service technicians much easier: by appointing a coordinator within the team, upcoming alarms are assigned directly and specifically to a technician. This means that the distribution of tasks is visible to everyone at all times. Better coordination and the exchange of experience between technicians are supported by functions such as the technician chat.

Optimization of HVAC system service with site networking

The police department’s requirements were clear: to be able to manage all buildings centrally via remote access, while maintaining the highest security standards and ultimately saving energy and costs!

DEOS AG met all these requirements in close cooperation with the responsible service technicians. A Tosibox100 with a 4G modem has been installed in a total of nine buildings. This is connected to the BACnet building management system OPENweb. This ensures secure remote access via the ServicePortal. This approach is rounded off by two-factor authentication via HTML5 dial-in and comprehensive firewall functions.

The building structures, some of which were very old, did not allow for a new cabling structure. In addition, the existing broadband connection to the buildings was not powerful enough to ensure smooth operation of the system. A Tosibox Lock 500i with an integrated LTE modem was used here. To ensure high availability, the box is connected to the internet in two ways: DSL and SIM/mobile communications.

At present, a total of 12 users have access to the systems. In the near future, additional buildings will be connected in this manner. The objective is to enable all buildings at the police academy to be connected centrally and thus managed centrally. Remote access and location networking allow all service technicians to continuously monitor all systems and respond quickly to any alarms that may occur with the appropriate measures.
