This allows the city to make significant savings on heating costs in schools and public buildings

Mayor Sven Kaiser speaks of short-term measures that will save at least 20% of previous energy consumption. An important component: the city’s existing LoRaWAN wireless network.

Battery-free LoRaWAN heating thermostat – immediate energy savings in the classroom

No one knows exactly how the energy situation will develop in the coming months. However, in order to be prepared for the worst-case scenario, Geldern’s mayor set up an “energy expert group” during the summer holidays. Its task is to examine and prepare short-term measures to significantly reduce the energy consumption of municipal facilities.

“Our goal is to take measures in the relatively short term to reduce the city of Geldern’s energy consumption by at least 20%,” says Mayor Sven Kaiser. It is important to him to emphasize that only measures that really make sense will be taken.

Geldern’s existing LoRaWAN network. The DEOS SAM room air traffic light, for example, measures the CO2 content, humidity, and temperature of a room. This data is then uploaded to the cloud via the LoRaWAN network. From there, it can be accessed at any time and from any location. This not only allows problems to be localized, but also settings such as room temperature to be controlled. The system is already in use in municipal schools, among other places, which have been equipped with the DEOS SAM CO2 traffic light in recent months.

“The fact that we set up the LoRaWAN network back in 2021 offers advantages for the current situation that we definitely want to take advantage of,” says Kaiser. “And all the measures we have taken in combination with our LoRaWAN network are also sustainable, because we will continue to benefit from the savings achieved not only in winter, but also in the years to come.”

The first installation will take place at the Adelheid Elementary School in Geldern: All classrooms and school rooms will be equipped with battery-free LoRaWAN DEOS TEO radiator thermostats in order to reduce energy consumption and heating costs.

The radiator thermostat centrally controls the room temperature via customizable time programs (e.g., working hours, vacation calendar, etc.). In addition, the temperature is lowered at night for specific rooms, floors, or the entire building—centrally and automatically.

The central operating and administration platform displays the current room temperature, defines the operating mode, and adjusts it if necessary. Operation is simple using a standard browser on a smartphone, tablet, or PC.

Another advantage: the thermostats are completely maintenance-free, as they do not require batteries. The heat from the radiator is used to provide the necessary energy.
